Located near the old road in Chandavila and in a beautiful place where you can see the town of La Codosera, stands the medieval castle from the 14th century.
Due to its proximity to Portugal and major towns with fortifications such as Alegrete, Arronches and Ouguela, it was an important outpost for the defense of the Luna Castle in Alburquerque, and also served as a lookout, parapet and defensive line against Portugal.
The constant attacks and incursions by the Portuguese, who came mostly from the castle of the Alegrete population, led to the capture of La Codosera in 1325 by Alfonso IV of Portugal, after a seven-month siege and the destruction of almost all of the castle’s defenses.
The population was not only immersed in these disputes between the Castilians and the Portuguese, as it was immersed in the struggles between supporters of Juana ‘La Beltraneja’ (daughter of the Catholic Kings and considered the legitimate descendent of Beltran de la Cueva) and Princess Elizabeth (sister of Henry IV), for the succession to the crown of Castile. The situation was further aggravated by the marriage of Juana Alfonso V of Avis (King of Portugal), who wished to annex Castile.
According to popular tradition, Juana ‘La Beltranejo’ took refuge in the castle of La Codosera after the defeat at the Battle of Toro. Then her aunt Elizabeth held her in the castle until her deportation to Portugal, where she retired as a nun in the Santa Clara Monastery in Coimbra (Portugal).
With the Portuguese Restoration War (1640 and 1668), the castle was again destroyed, undergoing different reconstructions in later centuries, and is completely lost its original structure. All that remains of the ancient castle are the remnants of the old defensive wall.
Next to the castle and on the foundation of the old wall stands the colossal image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, designed by the sculptor Jenaro Lázaro Gumiel in the year 1957.
Today the castle is privately owned and not open to visitors.
