Medieval Quarter or Inside Village

You are in Index Heritage Medieval Quarter or Inside Village

Brief Description

This is a Jewish Gothic Quarter located inside the city walls, also called "Inside Village" or "Black Teta". The urban style of the narrow streets runs along the northern slope of the hill on which the fortress sits, while the streets are arranged along and at the top of the hillside, taking advantage of the different plots of contoured lines, according to the topography.

Generally, the houses in this area are of small proportions and just one floor, and are mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries, with construction details on the facade such as lintels, escutcheons or jambs that give off a certain peculiarity. Masonry was the preferred material, although there are some examples of houses that used granite blocks. The roofs of most houses are made with Arabia tiles and with whitewashed walls. Some granite arches remain as a gateway to the houses, which gives the village some gothic flair.

The houses were somewhat reduced in size and consisted of a single floor with an entrance hall, one or two bedrooms and a narrow staircase leading to a kind of attic or "doblao" intended primarily for drying sausages and for grain and fruit storage. Masonry was the preferred material used, but some are also made from granite blocks.

The Medieval Town"s main road is the Derecha Street, which extends from east to west, from the Village Gate to the Gate of Valencia, and is the starting point for almost every street in the medieval enclosure. There is also a second north-south axis road, linking the Church of St. Mary, and the Puerta de Alcantara (now defunct).  In addition, the town still retains several defensive towers of great artistic interest, such as the Clock Tower, Cabrera Tower and the Rocha Tower.

The famous Alburquerque Medieval Festival takes place within its walls in mid-August, and is a Regional Tourist Interest Site. The impressive Luna Castle and the intramurals of this town are the main stages of this event that aims to recover the life and customs of a people that lived in a different time.
