Brief Description
Declared in 1995 of Cultural interest with historic-artistic category, neighborhood Jewish Gothic of Valencia de Alcantara is composed of 19 streets characterised by its popular type of two-storey houses.
It is located in what was the space within the walls and consists of long, narrow, irregular typically medieval layout of streets. Dwellings are narrow and deep, two story and some headroom in the rear part. Of popular tipologiamedieval, were built in brick, with stone shelves, stairs and door frames. The façades are marked by its narrowness and verticality, they usually have vain door in the lower, predominantly pointed (ogival, typical of the Gothic style), and window on the first floor. The spans are built with granite blocks and usually have umbra.l
Its expansion took place between the 13th and 15th centuries, due to population growth and the coexistence of citizens of the three cultures that coexist in Spain, a majority Christian, Moorish who wish to remain on their land, to which is added a Jewish community that seeks more quiet places fleeing from the persecutions of the big cities. This coexistence is that characteristic neighborhoods are created for each of the communities, while preserving enough of the features of their way of life.
