Brief Description
Valencia de Alcantara has one of the most important megalithic complexes in Europe. Are some 41 dolmens which have come down to us 33 granite and slate 8; estimated that they have gone 14.
In 1992 they were declared "Cultural property" category of archaeological site. Therefore, they belong to the Neolithic and CHALCOLITHIC periods. They were buried individually or collectively deceased. Along with them, in the Chamber of the dolmen, stood the trappings that accompany them in their life there.
The material used in its construction usually depends on the place where the megalith was erected, mainly granite, but also there are slate. In what refers to its structure, we find dolmens with indeterminate forms, due to its bad state of conservation, along with other dolmens of simple camera, camera with long runner or runner short camera. The materials found therein are from carved industry (tips of arrows, sheets scrapers), polished industry (axes, molederas), ornaments (beads necklace and pendants) and ceramics, to idols of anthropomorphic character. All made with local materials, except some embellishment in Jet of Northern origin.
10 routes which are the more affordable for visitors have been established: the No. 1: Way of the Buenavista, with 6 dolmens (boats I, II boats, Fragoso, the horse, Changarilla and the Corchero.) The No. 2: Carretera de San Pedro and the Fontanera, 4 dolmens (gardens of the nuns, Tapada de Anta, La Miera and the boat). The No. 4: La Zafra, Calleja of the page, with 5 dolmens, (I, II, III, IV and V. Zafra) No. 5: Las Tapias (Carretera de San Vicente km. 1,250), with two dolmens (Tapias I, very full, and walls II). And route No. 6: La Aceña de la Borrega (Alcorneo road), with 6 dolmens (Anta de la Marquesa, Datas I and II, Cajiron I and II and the mulberry tree).
